Volunteering for Odils

Volunteering opportunities at Odils

We offer the opportunity for volunteers to join our ESOL classes and the Creche. If you are interrested please read below and contact our Volunteers Team at volunteering@odils.com , via phone or social media.

How many volunteers does Odils need?

Odils started as a voluntary organisation and we know that volunteers can make a big difference to our school.

We currently have a team of about 25 volunteers across Plymouth and Saltash, but we are always happy to welcome more.

What do volunteers do?

Most of our volunteers help students in their English classes. We also have volunteers in the crèche, and some people offer help with particular skills for example, pronunciation or creative writing.

Our Aish Conversation Clubs are also run by volunteers.

How much time do I need to commit?

We ask classroom or crèche volunteers to regularly commit to one or two 2 hour sessions each week.

Who can be a volunteer?

Our volunteers come from many different backgrounds. Some are retired teachers, others would like to train to be English teachers and some are interested in meeting people from other countries and cultures.

You don’t need any particular skills or experience. The most important things are patience, as well as good English.

We encourage our students to help, but the minimum English level to be a volunteer is Entry 3.

To volunteer in the crèche you will need to have a full DBS check.

What do our volunteers say?

“It’s been great to help out and to be a small part of providing a welcome to people, enabling them to live more confident lives in the UK.”- Jane

“I’m retired and I enjoy spending this time to give back to the community”- Mary

“I enjoy working with the students and helping them learn.”- Sarah

“The teachers are kind and professional.”- Jiahui

“I had some free time and thought it would be nice to work with the friendly ODILS people. I enjoy my time in the classes.”- Esin

“It’s been really interesting to attend classes and see how the lessons are taught here, and it’s lovely to be there to help students when teacher is busy. The teacher is nice and all the students are kind and eager to learn. This is a good opportunity to gain some experience of my own for when I become a TEFL teacher.”- Gabbi
